The playstation 5 update for Fallout 76 is currently being tested through a Public Test Server (PTS), rather than released as a finished live-game update. The planned upgrade is intended to bring a native current-generation version to PS5 and PS5 Pro, with performance and display improvements still being evaluated.

Fallout 76 begins testing its native PS5 and PS5 Pro update

Bethesda says the test covers the upcoming Fallout 76 update for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series consoles. The stated goal is to collect live performance data, particularly on frame rate and stability, before the update reaches the live game. Bethesda’s “Inside the Vault” announcement

The planned console features include a targeted 60 frames per second on PS5 and PS5 Pro. On compatible displays, PS5 and PS5 Pro are also listed for variable refresh rate support, while the PS5 is expected to support 1440p resolution and the PS5 Pro 4K resolution. The 4K support is described as applying to compatible displays. Bethesda’s announcement

The update is designed to make Fallout 76 run natively on current-generation PlayStation and Xbox hardware, allowing the game to use those consoles more efficiently. Bethesda also clarified that PS5 and Xbox Series X players already have improved draw distances and shadows compared with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, and that those improvements will continue with the update. How the PlayStation test works

PlayStation players are instructed to join Bethesda’s Discord server and follow the directions in the #76-announcements channel to access the PTS. Bethesda’s instructions do not establish that every PS5 owner automatically receives access, and they do not provide a public release date for the finished update. Bethesda’s announcement

The test uses a snapshot of a player’s live-game character. That snapshot includes the character’s weapons, armor, items and C.A.M.P.s, while the Atomic Shop and seasonal content are disabled in the test environment. Bethesda also points players to a PTS Locker outside Vault 76, which may contain equipment and supplies relevant to the features being tested. Bethesda’s announcement

Progress made during a PTS should not be treated as permanent live-game progress. In its explanation of the related Xbox Series test, Xbox Wire says PTS progression does not transfer to the live game, does not persist between test cycles, and may include bugs because the content is not final. What is confirmed—and what is not

The confirmed information is that testing has begun for a native current-generation version with a targeted 60 FPS mode and platform-specific resolution and VRR support. The test is meant to help evaluate performance and stability before launch.

What remains unresolved is the final release date, whether the listed performance targets will be met consistently, and whether every planned feature will remain unchanged in the finished update. The available reporting establishes that the PS5 version is in testing, but not when the update will leave the Public Test Server.
