The commonwealth bank loyalty program changes will expand CommBank Yello beyond credit-card spending, allowing eligible customers to earn points through products such as home loans, savings accounts, insurance and cards. Commonwealth Bank says the reworked program will launch on 1 October 2026, while exact earning and conversion rates remain unclear in the available reporting.

CommBank Yello will expand rewards beyond credit-card spending from 1 October 2026

The central change is that rewards will be linked to more of a customer’s banking relationship, rather than only to credit-card purchases. Commonwealth Bank says more than nine million customers will be eligible to earn points through everyday banking activity, including home loans, savings accounts, insurance and credit cards. Customers will be able to earn, track and redeem points through the CommBank app and NetBank, according to the bank’s announcement.

The points are intended to be used across everyday spending and travel. The bank lists groceries, utility bills, fuel, dining and holidays as possible uses, with participating brands including Woolworths Everyday Rewards, Origin Energy, Myer, Velocity Frequent Flyer, DoorDash, bp and Qatar Airways. Asian Banking & Finance also reports that CommBank Travel Booking, provided by Hoppe, and More Telecom are included in the expanded rewards offering (Asian Banking & Finance).

The program is scheduled to launch on 1 October 2026. Eligible CommBank customers are expected to begin receiving notifications from 18 August, according to Asian Banking & Finance. The available reports do not establish whether every eligible customer will receive the same earning opportunities or benefits.

How the points structure is changing

The revised model appears designed to reward customers who hold several products with the bank. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that customers with only one CommBank credit card will receive fewer points for spending, while those who combine products such as a mortgage or term deposit will receive more (The Sydney Morning Herald).

That report also says customers will receive more generous conversion rates when exchanging the new Yello points for Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer points than for Qantas Frequent Flyer points. The Australian Financial Review similarly reports that the bank is making it easier for customers to use points for Virgin Australia flights, while mentioning debit cards, home loans, term deposits, insurance and CommSec trading as part of the broader rewards relationship (Australian Financial Review).

However, the available announcement from Commonwealth Bank names Velocity as a participating brand but does not provide the comparative airline conversion rates. The Sydney Morning Herald says the exact earning rates for airlines and retailers were still to be announced.

What customers still need to check

The confirmed direction is an expansion of CommBank Yello into broader banking activity, with points managed through the app and NetBank and a planned October launch. The reports do not provide a complete schedule showing how many points each product will earn, whether rates differ by account balance or product combination, or how points will convert across each retailer and airline.

The bank has also been reported as exploring a premium charge card, with a possible launch in 2027, but that is separate from the October 2026 Yello changes and is not confirmed as a launch. For now, the next concrete development is the notification process beginning on 18 August, followed by the reworked program’s scheduled launch on 1 October 2026.
